Chapter Ten

Remington

I awoke with the dim light of dawn slipping past the curtains. I blinked, sitting up. I’d slept in my clothes above the blankets. I hadn’t even taken off my shoes. I kicked them off, stretching.

Had the night before been a dream? Or had that really happened? Had I believed a lie for the past ten years, setting my life on a track that I never wanted?

And it had all been my father’s fault.

I wanted to curl into a ball and go back to sleep and wake up in another ten years.

What would I even say to her? What could I say? I thought my head might explode the night before.

I had never been close with my dad. He treated me like a business colleague since before I could remember. I had always been expected to follow in the family footsteps, and I had. I’d played right into his little game.

Except for two times in my entire life.

First, when I wanted to go to McManus College. McManus was a small college in the mountains of Colorado, not exactly known for producing millionaires. He’d wanted me to go to Cornell, just like him. But, he’d accept McManus once I showed him my five-year plan of going straight from college to my MBA at MIT. And I’d done exactly that, in the end.

Second, when I’d invited Julia to go with me. But that had been settled quickly enough with his little scheme. I wondered how much he had paid Curtis.

Which was why walking in on him fucking my wife was both a shock and to be expected. I’d surrounded myself with snakes — why was I so surprised that they bit me?

I grabbed my phone, calling Kelly immediately.

“Good morning, Remington,” she said politely.

“Hey, Kelly. So, I know I sounded a little strange yesterday questioning Guardian’s interest, but now I want to go for it. Full steam ahead.” I didn’t want anything to do with my father’s company.

She paused, clearing her throat.

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

“I’m going to have Jones call you.” She had switched right back into her overly kind voice.

“Tell me.”

“No, ma’am. You don’t pay me enough to give you bad news.”

“I’ll give you a raise,” I said quickly, desperate.

“I’ll have Jones call. Is there anything else you need?”

I stood, dread growing in my stomach. “Tell me as a friend, not as an assistant. Please.”

She paused. I’d never begged her before.

She lowered her voice. “Jones says the Board is ready to make the move to buy Osprey, but the investors are feeling a little jumpy. You’ve been MIA lately, and they don’t know if you can handle this.”

Fuck.

“That’s not my fault. We lost power. I haven’t had internet for three days, Kelly,” I said, pacing around the room.

“It’s not that. It’s from before that. It’s the last eight months..”

“My divorce is making me seem unstable?”

I swear I could hear Kelly shrug noncommittally.

“That’s a double standard. Would they have ever questioned me if I was a man getting a divorce?” I glared at the wall.
